We work in sensitive environments, where ecology plays an important role in the functioning of the habitats. We therefore focus on ecology to minimise and mitigate impacts but more often we aim to maximise benefits for ecology. Our philosophy is, where possible, to move away from hard engineering solutions for waterside management and to treat water and sediment as resources to be used for the benefit of wildlife and people. Many existing places have potential for enhancement and in new developments we recognise the importance of good assessment and design at the outset.

With expertise in bioengineering techniques we are able to advise on wetland and bankside design for rivers, lakes and coastal locations, including the use of dredged sediments and stabilisation techniques. These services combine both our engineering and ecological expertise in baseline surveys, ecological impact assessment, project design, mitigation and implementation.

Our ecology staff have extensive wetland and aquatic experience, including work in sensitive locations and designated sites. We have particular in-house expertise in invertebrate surveys and ecology, and vegetation surveys.

Our baseline services include:

  • Protected species surveys for water voles, otters, bats and great crested newts, and also for the European protected little whirpool ramshorn snail
  • Anisus vorticulus
  • Biological monitoring including BMWP methods and RIVPACS / RICT analysis
  • Ecological appraisals
  • Ecological impact assessment
  • Habitats Regulations Assessment

Restoration & Enhancement

Nature restoration is important for the protection and the vitality of wildlife. The restoration of damaged and degraded sites can deliver benefits for biodiversity. Exo Environmental recognises the importance of restoration of existing sites, but also the development of new ones. The development of brown sites, disused pits and mining sites, and the improvement of green infrastructure all offer great potential habitats for wildlife. Both large and also small scale developments such as stepping stones and corridors can lead to benefits for ecosystem services. We can provide a wide range of services, including project design stages;

  • Feasibility studies
  • Eco-hydrology appraisals
  • Mapping and landscape designs
  • Ecological management plans
  • Protected species licensing and mitigation

For the implementation phases of projects we offer:

  • Project management
  • Site supervision and ecological clerk of works
