Exo Environmental were commissioned to provide stream water flow measurements at Troston Farm (Suffolk), to support an application for a water abstraction licence.
Due to limited data availability, initial permissible abstraction volumes were conservative and not sufficient for the farms requirements. To verify the accuracy and contribute to the existing data, Exo provided a responsive and affordable water velocity and topographic survey. This initial spot measurement allowed for decision making of future long-term monitoring surveys and subsequent licence applications.
Water velocity measurements were obtained from monitoring stations across the site, using an electromagnetic current velocity meter, specially designed for shallow and low flow environments. In conjunction, centimetre-accurate channel cross-sections and the locations of key infrastructure, such as sewage outfall pipes and culverts, were obtained using our topographic survey equipment. On the basis of these measurements, channel gradients, flow rates and volumes across the site were calculated.
The survey provided the client with a current and accurate dataset and suggested that the local waterways were capable of supporting larger abstraction volumes, without causing significant adverse environmental impact.
If you need any water flow monitoring, Exo are fully equipped and skilled to get you the data and information you need. Please contact us for more information, we’d be happy to assist you.
