Sediment sampling involves taking representative samples from the bed (benthic) or sub-surface of a tidal or non tidal water body. Sediment samples are commonly taken to assess the physical and chemical characteristics. It can also help to understand the natural and anthropogenic influences on the water quality and sediment lifecycles.
The samples are processed, determining any number of environmental parameters, including:
- Particle size distribution
- Presence of inorganic and organic pollutants
- Mineral composition
- Benthic Taxonomic classification
- And much more!
These parameters can act as indicators, helping us to determine habitat conditions and possible causes behind pollution spikes. This can then be used to help develop and implement a strategy, with relevant stakeholders, such as Natural England and The Wildlife Trusts, to monitor and improve the ecological health of the water body.
