Horsey Canape update

As you may remember Exo Environmental have been monitoring the Broads Authority’s CANAPAE Site at Horsey, since October 2021. CANAPE (link to website https://northsearegion.eu/canape/ ) or Creating a New Approach to Peatland Ecosystems is a European funded Interreg project which aims to deliver peatland restoration; to encourage carbon sequestration as part of mitigation approaches to tackling climate change. The restoration of the peatland will also help encourage the development of valuable habitat for rare UK species.

As part of this project Exo were appointed by the Broads authority to monitor a host of different environmental parameters from peat coring and mapping, water quality and water levels.

So far, we have collected 4 months’ worth of data and are soon going back to site to collect this month’s. Monthly monitoring will continue to take place throughout 2022, and with spring just around the corner we are looking forward to exciting seasonal changes such as the appearance of grass snakes on site!

With this data set we are aiming to determine the success of this land use change in producing conditions suitable for wetland and subsequent peat formation.
